Playtech removes Marvel slots for good

Playtech just announced that all Marvel slots will be removed from all their online casinos by the end of this week. We’ve been waiting for this for a long time.

No slots for Disney

When Disney acquired Marvel they had to go through a lot of licensing agreements. The franchise, after all, is massive. And Playtech has had an agreement with Marvel for video slots for many years. But as a family-friendly company, any gambling links are not desired by Disney, so it was announced in 2013 that Playtech’s license would not be extended beyond the expiration date.

Playtech’s license was to end on the 31st December 2016, but the games have still been available since then. Nobody quite knew when the slots would finally be removed. Now Playtech announced that they would disappear by the 31st March.

Age of Gods suite as a replacement

Being aware of the inevitable outcome that the hugely successful Marvel suite would have to be removed eventually, Playtech has clearly planned on not leaving players hanging in the air without a replacement. Certain that there would be no licensing issue when it came to Greek mythology, Playtech launched their Age of the Gods slots. Most of them keep the existing game engines already used by the Marvel slots and serve indeed as direct replacements:

  • Iron Man 2 – Age of the Gods: King of Olympus
  • The Incredible Hulk – Age of the Gods Prince of Olympus
  • Fantastic Four – Age of the Gods Furious Four
  • The Avengers – Age of the Gods
  • Elektra – Age of the Gods Goddess of Wisdom

There are quite a few more slots than above sample, but this is just to give you an idea what Playtech has done to keep the popular games somewhat alive. Of course, all of those slots were also linked to the progressive jackpot that was available with the Marvel slots.

Only a few weeks ago a lucky player actually won the progressive jackpot of nearly €1 million on the Age of the Gods slot, proving that the slots have been accepted by players.

New superhero slots from DC

Another Playtech strategy seems to be to keep our fascination with superheroes alive by penning a new agreement with DC as well. There’s no danger of DC being acquired by Disney anytime soon and so now we get a whole slew of DC inspired slots that look just as amazing as the Marvel slots used to.

Recently The Green Lantern has been released and the consent seems to be that the slot is better than the movie was. Additionally a number of Batman and Superman inspired slots have been released as well. Playtech isn’t even just going with the latest iterations of both heroes, but instead went classic as well, bringing us slots inspired by the old Batman TV show and the classic Superman movies.

The Marvel slots shall be missed, but players are likely going to be consoled by the Age of the Gods and DC slots.
